Fenaka CEO Outlines Plan to Resolve Addu City’s Ongoing Power Crisis

By Hussain Shinan Published March 7, 2025

Fenaka Corporation’s Managing Director, Mohamed Najah, has provided an update on the ongoing electricity crisis in Addu City, assuring the public that efforts are underway to resolve the issue.

The crisis, which has been causing frequent power disruptions in the city and surrounding islands, stems from problems with the generators at the Central Power Station, which provides electricity to the region. According to Fenaka, the root cause of the power shortages is a lack of regular maintenance for the generators. Despite attempts to resolve the issue, additional generator failures have left the city with insufficient power supply.

To address the immediate concerns, Fenaka has already moved a 1.8MW generator to Addu City. However, the continued power load challenges have resulted in ongoing outages. Najah clarified that the issue is not due to a lack of spare parts, as all necessary components are available in Addu, but rather the malfunctioning of the existing generators.

Fenaka is actively working on bringing more generators to the city, with another 1.8MW unit expected to arrive next week. This move is expected to stabilize the electricity supply in the short term.

“We are also focused on providing a long-term solution to Addu City’s electricity issues,” Najah stated. A proposal is currently being prepared for submission to the relevant authorities, with a target to resolve the issue within the year.

Once the additional generators are operational, Fenaka aims to improve power stability, allowing the corporation to focus on overhauling the existing generators. Najah reassured residents that the necessary spare parts for repairs are already in place and that work on overhauling the units will begin soon.

With Ramadan approaching, ensuring a steady and uninterrupted power supply is a top priority for Fenaka. The company is committed to resolving these ongoing issues and ensuring that residents have reliable electricity throughout the holy month.

In addition to these short-term measures, Fenaka has started construction on a new 32MW power house in Addu City, which will serve as a long-term solution to the region’s electricity shortages. Despite delays, the government is expediting the project to meet the growing demand for power in the city.

Fenaka remains focused on stabilizing the power supply in Addu City and is committed to delivering lasting solutions to the ongoing electricity challenges.
