Account Reinstated: Hassan Kurusee Returns Amidst Public Outcry

By Ahmed Ashraf Published December 17, 2024

The suspension of Hassan Kurusee’s account on the X platform has been officially lifted, allowing his return to an audience of over 40,000 followers. This development follows a vigorous campaign led by both the public and opposition figures under the hashtag #BringBackHKurusee, aimed at restoring his access after his controversial posts accusing top government officials of corruption and embezzlement triggered its suspension.

Kurusee’s account has faced multiple suspensions over the past two years but has consistently managed to re-emerge on the platform. His history of controversial posts dates back to the administration of former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih (Ibu), where similar accusations were made.

In the wake of his latest suspension, several accounts emerged attempting to impersonate Hassan Kurusee, adding to the complex narrative surrounding his online presence. Speculation previously linked the account to former Maldivian President Mohamed Nasheed. This connection was fueled by Nasheed’s acknowledgment of another account, ‘Alex Ahmed,’ as his unofficial online persona. However, in April 2023, Nasheed distanced himself from such claims and filed a police complaint, asserting that the anonymous account was harming his reputation.

In August 2023, a court order was issued following a police petition to advance investigations into uncovering the individual behind the account. As authorities continue their efforts, the ongoing developments remain a focal point of public interest, highlighting the intricate dynamics between digital expression and political discourse.
