Accountability in Action: Ten Senior Officials Suspended from Housing Ministry

By Ahmed Ashraf Published December 20, 2024

According to a report by local media outlet Mihaaru, ten employees from the Housing Ministry, including Senior Political Directors and Deputy Ministers, have been suspended today. Mihaaru indicates that these suspensions occurred in the afternoon, though the reasons for the suspensions remain undisclosed.

Meanwhile, the police have initiated an investigation into allegations that the Housing Development Corporation (HDC) allocated plots of land to individuals not listed in the Binveriya Scheme. There has been a documented exchange of letters between HDC and the Housing Ministry concerning these land allocations. The police confirmed this evening that they have procured necessary documents from the Housing Ministry pertinent to their investigation.

In light of the fire that erupted at the Housing Ministry last Thursday, Minister Dr. Ali Haidar has reported that only a limited number of documents were salvaged. The police have nonetheless affirmed tonight that they are receiving the required documentation from the Housing Ministry for their inquiry into the suspected HDC land allocations.

The fire, which ignited around 6:30 AM last Thursday at the Housing Ministry, subsequently spread to affect both the Construction Ministry housed in the same building and the adjacent Environment Ministry’s Green Building. This incident escalated into a significant conflagration, resulting in four hours of firefighting efforts, ultimately leaving the premises extensively damaged and unusable.
