By The Standard Published December 1, 2024

Dr. Aishath Rameela, the Minister of Agriculture and Animal Welfare, has stepped down from her position due to health concerns, according to an announcement from the President’s Office. Dr. Rameela, who is undergoing treatment for advanced-stage cancer, made the difficult decision to resign as she continues her battle with the illness.

President Mohamed Muizzu accepted her resignation and expressed deep gratitude for her service. In a statement, he lauded Dr. Rameela’s dedication and her significant contributions to the government’s efforts to promote the rule of law and improve the lives of Maldivians.

“Despite her health challenges, Dr. Rameela has been an active and capable member of the Cabinet,” President Muizzu remarked. He also conveyed his hopes for her recovery, offering prayers for her strength and a brighter future.

Dr. Rameela was appointed to lead the Ministry of Agriculture and Animal Welfare on November 17, 2023. During her tenure, she spearheaded several key initiatives aimed at advancing the agricultural sector and enhancing animal welfare standards in the Maldives.

Her resignation marks the end of a notable chapter in her public service career, but the President expressed confidence in her continued contributions to the nation in other capacities.

The government has yet to announce a successor for the ministerial position.
