In a significant diplomatic engagement, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu of the Maldives and Malaysian Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim reaffirmed their nations’ enduring friendship and commitment to enhanced cooperation across various sectors. The joint press conference held today highlighted shared values, economic collaboration, and mutual support for global peace initiatives.
President Muizzu emphasized the deep-rooted ties between the two countries, grounded in shared Islamic faith, mutual respect, and longstanding goodwill. He expressed gratitude for Malaysia’s generous assistance in human capital development, particularly through the Malaysian Technical Cooperation Programme (MTCP), which has significantly contributed to the capacity building of Maldivian civil servants .
Looking ahead, both leaders expressed optimism about expanding cooperation into new areas such as floating solar energy, defense, and digital technology. Prime Minister Anwar noted the vast potential for collaboration between the two maritime nations, emphasizing mutual benefits in sectors like education, tourism, sports, and health .
Economic ties were a focal point, with President Muizzu inviting Malaysian investors to explore opportunities in the Maldives, particularly in Special Economic Zones, financial services, the maritime economy, and the growing digital sector. In 2024, Malaysia’s total trade with the Maldives increased by 4.3% to RM862.7 million, underscoring the strengthening economic relationship between the two nations .
The leaders also addressed global issues, reaffirming their unwavering support for the Palestinian people’s legitimate quest for statehood. Both countries emphasized the importance of resolving the Palestinian issue through peaceful means in accordance with international law and relevant United Nations resolutions .
During the visit, five Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) were signed, covering cooperation in youth and sports, health, tourism, bilateral relations, and training of foreign office staff. These agreements lay the foundation for even stronger ties between the Maldives and Malaysia .
Concluding his remarks, President Muizzu assured that the Maldives would continue to stand as a “true friend of Malaysia,” committed to a shared vision of development, peace, and stability across both nations and the wider region.
