Charges Loom for Alleged Misallocation in Gedhoruveriya Scheme: ACC and PG Office Confer

By Ahmed Ashraf Published December 25, 2024

The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has initiated discussions with the Prosecutor General’s (PG) Office to consider filing charges against individuals suspected in the allocation of apartments under the former government’s Gedhoruveriya Housing Scheme. In a press release tonight, the ACC confirmed that it has officially entered the duty prosecution phase with the PG’s Office to determine potential charges against those implicated.

The ACC is committed to expediting the necessary procedures to conclude this phase and request charges for prosecution in this matter, which holds significant public interest. The commission’s extensive investigation into the Gedhoruveriya apartments, initially designated by President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih’s administration for long-term Malé residents, revealed that only 20 percent of selected recipients met all eligibility criteria. Consequently, the ACC has directed the current Housing Ministry to reassess the original list.

In compliance with this directive, the Housing Ministry has commenced reviewing over 20,000 applications from the initial round of the Hiyaa scheme. Separately, last Thursday, Prosecutor General Abbas Shareef instructed both the police and ACC to undertake a criminal investigation into land allocations under the previous government’s Binveriya and Gedhoruverin schemes that were awarded to unqualified individuals.
