Customs Opens New Regional Head Office in Addu City

By The Standard Published December 10, 2024

The Maldives Customs Service has inaugurated its new Southern Regional Head Office in Addu City, marking a significant step in enhancing customs operations in the southern region.

The facility, located in Maradhoo, was officially opened on Tuesday morning by Minister of Homeland Security and Technology Ali Ihsaan, alongside Commissioner General of Customs Fathimath Dhiyana. The inauguration ceremony highlighted the importance of the new office in improving services for the region’s residents and businesses.

Speaking at the event, Minister Ihsaan emphasized the need for a people-centric approach in delivering customs services. Recognizing Addu City as a major import hub, he urged customs officials to prioritize swift and efficient cargo clearance to meet the needs of the local community.

While the office will initially focus on documentation for the region, the minister revealed plans to expand its functions. “This office is currently structured to handle most of the region’s documentation work. In the future, we aim to provide additional customs services through this office that are presently available only in Malé,” he said.

Commissioner General Fathimath Dhiyana noted that the establishment of the new office would significantly enhance customs services across the region’s ports and harbors. She also highlighted the inclusion of classrooms within the facility, enabling training programs for customs employees to build their skills and improve service delivery.

The Southern Regional Head Office is equipped with a range of modern amenities, including classrooms, a conference hall, and an accommodation block, ensuring it can serve as a comprehensive hub for customs operations in the southern region.

This development underscores the government’s commitment to decentralizing services and improving efficiency, particularly in areas that play a vital role in the Maldives’ trade and economic activities.
