Government to Strengthen Partnership with UNICEF, Says Vice President Latheef

By The Standard Published November 29, 2024

Vice President Hussain Mohamed Latheef has reiterated the government’s commitment to deepening its collaboration with the United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF). His remarks came during a courtesy call from Hannan Suleiman, UNICEF’s Assistant Secretary-General and Deputy Executive Director for Management, at the President’s Office.

Vice President Latheef, who also serves as Chair of the Social Council, expressed gratitude for UNICEF’s longstanding support. He highlighted the government’s dedication to future initiatives aimed at enhancing the welfare and safety of children in the Maldives. “Our partnership with UNICEF is invaluable in advancing the rights and well-being of children across the nation,” he said.

During the meeting, Suleiman commended the Maldives for its significant strides in education, healthcare, and child protection. She highlighted the country’s impressive literacy rate, which remains close to 100 percent, as a testament to its commitment to education. Suleiman also praised the inclusion of Maldivian youth in delegations addressing environmental challenges, underscoring the importance of engaging young people in global discussions.

The discussion also touched on the government’s 20-year National Development Masterplan. Suleiman expressed UNICEF’s continued support for the plan, which outlines key strategies for sustainable development and improved social services.

Both parties agreed on the need to strengthen their existing partnership and reaffirmed their commitment to a joint approach in safeguarding children’s rights. The meeting concluded with a shared determination to build on past successes and work towards a brighter future for Maldivian children.
