Legal Storm Ahead: PG Orders Criminal Investigation into Solih Government’s Compensation Cases

By Ahmed Ashraf Published December 22, 2024

The Prosecutor General (PG) has directed the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) to launch a criminal investigation into the procedures employed by the Settlement Committee at the President’s Office for compensating various parties during former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih’s administration. The PG’s Office noted that the Public Accounts Committee of the People’s Majlis had reviewed the compensation issued by the state from November 17, 2018, to November 17 of the previous year and subsequently submitted a report to their office.

This report purportedly implicates several former high-ranking state officials in efforts to allocate state resources and funds to parties not entitled to them. It also suggests that some government employees acted against their official responsibilities, leading to financial losses for the state. The PG’s Office clarified that these allegations fall under the investigative purview of the ACC, prompting them to instruct the commission last Tuesday to undertake a criminal investigation.

Moreover, the PG’s Office emphasized that they have urged the ACC to carry out a prompt investigation and maintain consultation with their office as it unfolds. Concurrently, in response to initiating a criminal probe into this compensation issue, the Attorney General’s Office has resolved to annul agreements made by the prior administration regarding compensation payments and intends to recover those funds.
