Maldives High Court to Begin Annual Recess, Will Continue to Hear Urgent Cases

By The Standard Published November 30, 2024

The High Court of Maldives has officially announced the commencement of its annual recess, which will begin on December 1 and last until January.

During this period, most court hearings will be suspended, with the exception of cases that are legally required to be resolved within a specific timeframe or urgent matters that demand immediate attention. The General Assembly of the High Court has confirmed that they will continue to hear these cases during the recess, in accordance with the court’s regulations.

The Supreme Court will also enter its recess, with no hearings scheduled for the duration of the break. However, as with the High Court, any cases in which a decision is mandated by the Constitution or law within a specified timeframe will proceed as necessary.

While court hearings will be limited during this period, the acceptance of new cases and other administrative functions will remain operational. This ensures that the legal system can continue processing matters even while regular hearings are temporarily suspended.

The recess is part of the High Court’s routine schedule, allowing judges and court staff to take a break while ensuring that urgent legal issues are addressed in a timely manner.
