Maldives Synetecs makes history as first startup selected for web summit’s ALPHA program

By Ahmed Ashraf Published January 19, 2025

In a groundbreaking achievement, Maldives-based artificial intelligence (AI) startup Synetecs has been chosen for the ALPHA program at the highly anticipated Web Summit 2025. This marks a historic first for the Maldives, as Synetecs becomes the nation’s inaugural representative on this globally recognized platform. The event, which will host industry leaders, innovators, and investors from around the world, is scheduled to take place in Doha from February 23 to 26, 2025.

Pioneering AI Innovation in the Maldives

Synetecs has carved a niche in the global tech landscape with its mission to democratize artificial intelligence and bridge the digital divide. With nearly half of the world’s linguistic diversity under threat, the company is focused on empowering marginalized communities through cutting-edge AI tools designed to preserve and promote language diversity. Their initiatives aim to serve over 1.2 billion speakers of low-resource languages, enabling them to protect their cultural identities and thrive in a digital economy.

“Our selection into the ALPHA program is not just a milestone for Synetecs but also for the Maldivian tech ecosystem as a whole,” said Ismail Kaleem, CEO of Synetecs. “This recognition gives us the opportunity to showcase our innovations on a global stage and inspire other tech entrepreneurs in the Maldives to dream bigger.”

Web Summit ALPHA Program: A Launchpad for Global Startups

The ALPHA program is renowned for spotlighting early-stage startups with exceptional potential. Synetecs was selected after a rigorous evaluation process that assessed innovation, market impact, and value proposition. Participation in the program offers unparalleled opportunities, including access to global investors, mentorship sessions, media exposure, and the chance to compete in the prestigious PITCH competition.

The previous edition of Web Summit Qatar attracted over 15,000 attendees, including representatives from 1,000 startups across 81 countries. The 2025 event is set to be an even larger platform for innovative ideas and groundbreaking solutions.

Championing Language Preservation Through AI

Synetecs is addressing a pressing global challenge: the digital exclusion of low-resource language communities. With billions of people unable to access digital tools in their native languages, the company is developing AI solutions tailored to these underserved populations. Their offerings include:

  • Advanced speech recognition technology capable of processing diverse dialects for accurate voice-to-text conversion.
  • AI-driven content generation tools designed to preserve and share cultural heritage digitally.
  • Data sovereignty features to safeguard sensitive linguistic and cultural information.
  • Alignment with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to promote inclusive growth and development through language preservation.

From Dhivehi to a Global Mission

Synetecs began its journey by focusing on Dhivehi, the national language of the Maldives. Their flagship product, Thaana.ai, provides accessible AI tools for Dhivehi speakers and is already in use by institutions such as the President’s Office and the Anti-Corruption Commission. Additionally, DhivehiTales, an AI-powered storytelling platform, allows users to create and preserve traditional narratives in their native language.

As Synetecs prepares for Web Summit 2025, the startup is broadening its scope to include other low-resource languages, fostering global partnerships to advance its mission of inclusivity. “This platform allows us to connect with like-minded innovators, investors, and industry leaders who share our vision for an equitable digital future,” said Mohamed Jinas, Managing Director of Synetecs.

A Global Stage for Maldivian Innovation

Synetecs’ participation in Web Summit represents a transformative moment for the Maldives, placing the nation on the global tech map. The startup’s efforts underscore the importance of preserving linguistic and cultural heritage while ensuring that all communities have access to digital tools and opportunities.

With their groundbreaking work in AI and their focus on empowering marginalized communities, Synetecs is setting a precedent for innovation from small island nations. As they step onto the world stage in Doha, they are not just representing the Maldives—they are championing the cause of inclusivity, diversity, and digital transformation for all.
