Maldives Welcomes 1.5 Million Tourists in 2024, China Leads Arrivals

By The Standard Published October 8, 2024

The Maldives has recorded a milestone in its tourism sector, with tourist arrivals surpassing 1.5 million by the end of October this year, according to the latest data from the Ministry of Tourism.

The daily arrival rate currently averages 5,500 visitors, underscoring the continued appeal of the island nation as a premier destination. Tourism authorities are optimistic about meeting the government’s ambitious target of 2 million tourist arrivals by the end of 2024, reflecting a projected 10% growth in arrivals compared to the previous year.

China has emerged as the leading source market, contributing 228,000 tourists so far. Russia follows with 166,000 arrivals, while the United Kingdom ranks third with 128,000 visitors. Germany and Italy also remain significant contributors, with 110,000 and 107,000 tourists, respectively.

This surge in tourist numbers highlights the Maldives’ resilience and adaptability in the competitive global tourism market, aided by strategic marketing efforts and the easing of travel restrictions in key source countries. The tourism industry, a critical pillar of the Maldivian economy, is poised for a strong finish this year.

Authorities remain committed to enhancing the visitor experience through investments in infrastructure, environmental conservation, and diverse leisure offerings, ensuring the Maldives retains its status as a top travel destination.
