MDP to Stage Protest During Tomorrow’s Presidential Address

By Hussain Shinan Published February 5, 2025

The opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has announced plans to stage a protest during tomorrow’s Presidential Address. The event, which will mark the opening session of the 20th Parliament and feature President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s inaugural presidential statement of the year, is expected to witness significant opposition activity both outside and within the parliamentary premises.

According to party officials, the protest is aimed at the recent amendments to the Constitution—a move that has sparked widespread criticism from the MDP. The party has already held large rallies and a major march in recent days to denounce the government’s policies and the controversial constitutional changes.

The session, scheduled for tomorrow, will be chaired by Parliament President Abdul Raheem Abdulla. It is during this session that President Muizzu is set to deliver his first presidential statement to the new parliament, with a second address planned for Thursday.

MDP leaders have vowed to continue their activism until they believe that the government is “put on the right track.”
