Speaker of the People’s Majlis, Abdul Raheem Abdulla, has declared that the opposition will not be given an opportunity to pursue a no-confidence motion against President Mohamed Muizzu through Parliament.
Speaking at a campaign rally for Ahmed Saeed ahead of the upcoming Hithadhoo North constituency by-election in Addu City, Abdul Raheem said Addu’s long-term development depends on electing a representative who supports the government’s agenda and helps implement President Muizzu’s policies.
He also criticised opposition parties, arguing that parliamentary efforts presented as government oversight have failed to deliver meaningful results. Abdul Raheem specifically targeted the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party, accusing it of engaging in unproductive political activities within the legislature.
Addressing speculation about a possible no-confidence motion against the President, the Speaker issued a firm response.
“I would like to state clearly tonight: do not harbour such delusions. You will not be able to take a vote of no confidence against President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu through the People’s Majlis. We will not grant any such opportunity,” Abdul Raheem said.
During the rally, he also thanked former Hithadhoo North MP for his service to the constituency and expressed confidence that Ahmed Saeed would secure victory with Sinan’s support and assistance.
Abdul Raheem further said he believes voters in Addu would reject candidates associated with individuals he claimed were responsible for past incidents involving the destruction of major infrastructure and historical records in the city.
The Hithadhoo North by-election is scheduled for June 6, with political parties intensifying their campaigns ahead of the vote.
