President Muizzu Advocates Vaping Ban as People’s Choice to Protect the Younger Generation

By Ahmed Ashraf Published December 15, 2024

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has declared that the decision to prohibit vaping in the Maldives aligns with the public’s desire, emphasizing the collective effort to protect the nation from vaping’s detrimental impact. Addressing residents of Mahibadhoo in Alif Dhaal Atoll during his tour of three islands in the region, President Muizzu highlighted the public’s eagerness to shield the country from vaping-related issues.

He clarified that those involved in the vaping business operated within legal parameters and should not be blamed for past activities. “The nation has endured significant challenges. While those conducting business within legal bounds are not at fault, citizens have been urging for measures to safeguard their children,” he stated.

Following a ban effective from mid-last month on importing vaping devices and components, today marks the start of a comprehensive ban on their use in the Maldives, accompanied by severe penalties for violations. Importing these devices now invites a fine of 50,000 rufiyaa, with an added 10,000 rufiyaa per device. Selling vapes incurs a penalty of 20,000 rufiyaa plus 10,000 rufiyaa for each unit sold.

Furthermore, distributing vapes without charge results in a 10,000 rufiyaa penalty, and individuals caught using them will face a 5,000 rufiyaa fine. A World Health Organization (WHO) study indicates that 23.1% of boys and 10.7% of girls aged 13 to 15 in the Maldives are vape users.
