In a significant stride towards strengthening bilateral ties, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu commenced his inaugural official visit to Malaysia on Sunday, April 27, 2025. The visit, undertaken at the invitation of Malaysian Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, underscores the deep-rooted camaraderie between the two nations.
Touching down at Kuala Lumpur International Airport at 5:31 PM local time, President Muizzu was accorded a ceremonial welcome, including a guard of honor by the Royal Ranger Regiment. He was received by Malaysia’s Health Minister, Datuk Seri Dr. Dzulkefly Ahmad, serving as the Minister-in-Attendance, alongside other senior officials.
Accompanied by a high-level Maldivian delegation, President Muizzu’s four-day visit aims to bolster cooperation across multiple sectors. Scheduled engagements include an official welcoming ceremony at the Perdana Putra Complex and bilateral discussions with Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim. The leaders are expected to deliberate on enhancing collaboration in trade, investment, the halal industry, education, tourism, and youth and sports.
A highlight of the visit will be the signing of three Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) focusing on tourism, sports, and health cooperation. Additionally, two Exchange of Notes (EoNs) will be formalized, pertaining to diplomatic training and the establishment of bilateral consultations between the two countries.
Further cementing the cultural and educational ties, President Muizzu is slated to receive an Honorary Doctorate in Islamic Leadership and Madani Development from the International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM). The conferment ceremony will be officiated by Tengku Ampuan Pahang Tunku Azizah Aminah Maimunah Iskandariah, the Constitutional Head of IIUM. Following the ceremony, President Muizzu will deliver a public lecture titled “The Intellectual Renaissance: Unveiling the Scientific and Modern Developments of Islamic Civilisation.”
This visit not only reflects the enduring friendship between the Maldives and Malaysia but also addresses the welfare of the significant Maldivian diaspora residing in Malaysia. By fostering enhanced cooperation and understanding, both nations aim to ensure better access to services and address the concerns of Maldivians abroad.
President Muizzu is scheduled to conclude his visit and return to the Maldives on April 30, 2025.
