President Muizzu: Vaping ban essential for public health, not for financial gain

By Ahmed Ashraf Published January 22, 2025

In a recent address to the residents of R. Ungoofaaru, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu addressed public concerns regarding the government’s decision to ban vaping products while allowing the continued use of traditional tobacco. He emphasized that the prohibition of vaping under the Tobacco Control Act was implemented with the welfare of future generations in mind, not to serve any financial interests.

President Muizzu acknowledged the questions raised by some citizens about the selective nature of the ban. He explained that while vaping is a relatively new trend in the Maldives, traditional tobacco use has deep cultural roots, making an immediate and total ban on tobacco impractical. “Maldivians have been using tobacco for a long time, and therefore it is not something that can be banned all at once,” he stated.

Highlighting the rapid rise in vaping among the youth, President Muizzu expressed concern over its potential to become a widespread addiction if left unchecked. He noted that the decision to ban vaping was a proactive measure aimed at safeguarding the health of the younger population. “This is something we did to prevent it from reaching an uncontrollable point in the future and for the next generation, if it had been left unchecked as it was rapidly taking root,” he said.

Addressing speculations about the government’s financial motives, President Muizzu clarified that there was no intention to increase state revenue through higher taxes on tobacco products. He stated, “I don’t want to increase revenue by raising taxes in that area, to calculate state revenue based on the increased taxes from purchasing tobacco products.”

The President also called for public cooperation in tackling major health issues, including the vaping ban. He mentioned ongoing programs in collaboration with health centers to assist individuals who wish to quit tobacco use. “My policy is to eliminate the causes of major diseases before they lead to life-threatening conditions,” he added.

The vaping ban, which prohibits the import, sale, free distribution, and use of electronic cigarettes and vaping devices, was ratified as an amendment to the Tobacco Control Act on November 13, 2024. The ban on importation took effect on November 15, 2024, while the prohibition on usage and sale commenced on December 15, 2024.

This legislative move aligns with the government’s broader public health strategy to reduce the prevalence of smoking-related diseases and promote healthier lifestyles among Maldivians. The administration continues to implement measures aimed at curbing tobacco use, reflecting a commitment to the well-being of its citizens.
