President Ratifies Key Amendments to Elections Commission Act

By The Standard Published November 27, 2024

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has ratified the Second Amendment to the Elections Commission Act, introducing significant changes to the leadership structure of the electoral body. The amendment, passed during the 53rd sitting of the 20th Parliament on November 25, aims to enhance the appointment and resignation processes within the Elections Commission.

Under the new provisions, the President is now required to appoint the President and Vice President of the Elections Commission from its existing members, with these appointments subject to majority approval by Parliament. Additionally, the resignation procedure for these leadership roles has been updated. The President and Vice President of the Commission must now submit their resignations in writing directly to the President of the Maldives.

The amendment also includes a continuity clause, ensuring that the current President and Vice President of the Elections Commission remain in their positions unless legally removed.

Following ratification, the changes come into immediate effect, with the amended Act now published in the Government Gazette. The revisions are expected to streamline the operational dynamics of the Elections Commission, reinforcing its role in overseeing the country’s democratic processes.
