Rolling Your Own? Not Anymore! New Ban Hits Tobacco Accessories!

By Ahmed Ashraf Published January 2, 2025

The importation of materials essential for producing tobacco products has been prohibited. This ban extends to tobacco rolling papers, filters, and handheld machines used for rolling cigarettes. This information comes from major companies that import tobacco products to the Maldives.

In a letter addressed to the Commissioner General of Customs, Fathimath Dhiyana, by the Ministry of Health, instructions were given to confiscate and destroy any items or equipment intended for tobacco production if imported by any entity. Following the publication of this letter by local Newswire MvCrisis, crowds have begun queuing outside prominent tobacco importers’ shops, Root and OCC, located in Malé and Hulhumale.

Further updates will follow as more information is available…
