Sri Lankan Cashier Busted: Caught on CCTV Stealing from Malé City Store!

By Ahmed Ashraf Published March 13, 2025

A 24-year-old Sri Lankan woman, Vijendra Waduge Nirasha Rasaali, has been arrested on suspicion of embezzling substantial amounts of money and goods from a store on Majeedhee Magu, Malé City. According to Maldives Police Service reports, the alleged thefts occurred during her tenure as a cashier at the establishment.

The investigation was initiated following a complaint lodged on January 8th, detailing significant discrepancies in the store’s finances and inventory. Subsequent analysis of CCTV footage reportedly captured Rasaali extracting cash from the register. Acting on this evidence, Police apprehended her on February 9th. The court has since mandated her detention until the conclusion of the trial.

This incident underscores the importance of rigorous employee vetting and continuous monitoring to safeguard business assets. Local businesses are advised to implement stringent internal controls to prevent similar occurrences.
