STO Initiates Plans to Stabilize Prices Ahead of Ramadan

By The Standard Published December 9, 2024

The State Trading Organization (STO) has begun its preparations to manage commodity prices and ensure the availability of essential goods during Ramadan, which is set to begin in February 2025. The annual initiative, a staple of STO’s operations, aims to address the increased demand for staple foods and control potential price surges commonly associated with the holy month.

As part of these efforts, Minister of Economic Development and Trade Mohamed Saeed recently met with STO officials to review the organization’s plans. According to the Economic Ministry, the discussions emphasized maintaining stable commodity prices and ensuring the uninterrupted supply of essential goods during Ramadan.

This year’s preparations align with President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s commitment to easing the financial burden on Maldivian households during Ramadan. The President has pledged to continue offering utility bill discounts, a measure introduced in previous years.

In a departure from last year’s initiative, which involved distributing staple goods to households, the government will provide each household with a carton of canned tuna as part of its Ramadan support efforts.

STO’s proactive approach reflects its ongoing commitment to supporting the community during key periods. By increasing stock levels and collaborating with relevant authorities, the organization aims to mitigate any disruptions in supply while keeping prices affordable for consumers.

The government’s focus on addressing economic challenges during Ramadan underscores its broader commitment to enhancing the quality of life for Maldivians, ensuring both affordability and accessibility of essential goods during the holy month.
