Weather Alert: Orange Alert Issued for Maldives Due to Heavy Rain and Flood Risk

By Ahmed Ashraf Published January 3, 2025

The National Meteorological Service (MET) has announced an orange alert for several areas across the Maldives as weather conditions worsen. This alert, covering regions from Baa Atoll to Thaa Atoll, is in effect from 3 PM to 7 PM tonight. The MET Office has warned of heavy rainfall and thunderstorms, with potential flooding in these areas.

In light of the situation, the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has advised residents via a post on “X” to implement necessary safety measures to mitigate damage caused by the severe weather.

Moreover, a yellow alert is active for the region spanning Baa Atoll to Laamu Atoll. This advisory forecasts intense rain, thunderstorms, and wind speeds potentially reaching 45 miles per hour within cloud bands, effective until 7 PM this evening.
