Weather Alert: Prepare for Heavy Rain and Thunderstorms from January 13-18

By Ahmed Ashraf Published January 12, 2025

The Maldives Meteorological Service (MET Office) has issued a cautionary statement regarding an impending cyclonic circulation situated far east of the Maldives, in the southwest Bay of Bengal. This system is anticipated to move westwards, leading to the formation of intense convective clouds over the region. As a result, the Maldives is expected to experience rain with occasional heavy showers and thunderstorms across a fairly widespread area from January 13 to January 18, 2025. The MET Office has urged residents and visitors to stay informed through regular weather forecasts, advisories, and warnings to ensure safety and preparedness.

In recent days, Malé City and surrounding islands have already faced significant challenges due to torrential rain, which has led to flooding in various areas. Streets in Malé was seen submerged, causing disruptions to daily life and prompting emergency response teams to assist affected residents. The authorities has issued alerts advising caution as more rainfall is expected in the coming days. Authorities are working diligently to  provide relief where necessary, but citizens are urged to remain vigilant as the situation evolves.

With average winds predicted to strengthen, resulting in rough seas and potential swell surges particularly over northern and central atolls, maritime activities may also be impacted. The MET Office stresses the importance of adhering to safety measures and being prepared for possible disruptions. It is crucial for both locals and tourists in the region to heed official guidance and take necessary precautions during this period of adverse weather conditions.
