Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) has formalized a partnership with the Ministry of Sports, Fitness, and Recreation to expand fitness and recreation facilities across 63 islands in the Maldives. The initiative, aligned with President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s development agenda, aims to improve community health and promote active lifestyles nationwide.
The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed during a ceremony held at H. Meeru Maa. MACL Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director, Ibrahim Shareef Mohamed, represented the company, while Sports Minister Abdullah Rafiu signed on behalf of the government.
Speaking at the event, Shareef highlighted the significance of the agreement, noting that the project reflects MACL’s commitment to national well-being. “It is a great honor for MACL to contribute towards fulfilling President Muizzu’s pledge to establish fitness centers on all inhabited islands by 2026, ensuring the physical fitness and well-being of Maldivian citizens” he said.
According to government figures, the Ministry of Sports has already allocated the establishment of 87 fitness and recreation centers to state-owned enterprises and private sector partners. With MACL’s contribution, the initiative is expected to accelerate, bringing modern facilities and structured programs closer to island communities.
The government’s broader vision is to make fitness resources accessible to all Maldivians, reduce health disparities between urban and rural areas, and support long-term improvements in public health. The nationwide rollout of sports and recreation infrastructure is also expected to create new opportunities for youth engagement, talent development, and local employment.
By partnering with the Ministry, MACL extends its corporate social responsibility footprint beyond aviation services and into community-driven development. The collaboration positions the company as a key player in supporting both national health policy goals and President Muizzu’s pledge to transform every inhabited island into a hub of recreation and fitness by 2026.
