National Day celebrations shine with historic inaugurations in Utheem

By Ahmed Ashraf Published August 24, 2025

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has inaugurated the Utheem Elders’ Square, Onuhiya, as part of this year’s National Day celebrations in Utheem, Haa Alif Atoll. Following the inauguration, the President and First Lady Sajidha Mohamed planted two coconut palm trees at the square in memory of national hero Sultan Mohamed Thakurufaanu.

As part of the official activities, the foundation stone for the Boduthakurufaanu Gateway was laid today by Minister of Dhivehi Language, Culture and Heritage Adam Naseer Ibrahim, marking the beginning of a landmark project to revive the legacy of Ghazi Bandaarain.

The Boduthakurufaanu Gateway has been carefully designed to embody Maldivian history and heritage. Its six pillars, inspired by ancient mosque architecture, symbolize the six heroes of Kalahuohfunmee who fought valiantly for the nation’s independence. At night, six lights will illuminate the structure, representing the eternal memory of their sacrifice and dedication to Maldivian freedom and Islam.

The historic ceremony was attended by the President and First Lady, together with Vice President Uz Hussain Mohamed Latheef, Speaker of the People’s Majlis Mohamed Aslam, Chief Justice Ahmed Muthasim Adnan, and senior government officials, reflecting the national importance of the occasion.
