MET Office Warns of Heavy Rain and Rough Seas Across Maldives

By Ahmed Ashraf Published August 28, 2025

The Maldives Meteorological Service (MET Office) has cautioned that widespread rain will persist across the country, with some regions facing heavy downpours accompanied by thunder.

According to the latest forecast, winds in the southwestern and western atolls are expected to blow between 8 and 18 miles per hour, while other regions may experience stronger gusts of 13 to 23 miles per hour. The MET Office further warned that squalls could push wind speeds up to 40 miles per hour, creating hazardous conditions for travel and marine activity.

Seas are forecast to remain rough in the northern and central Maldives, moderately rough in the south, and especially turbulent during squalls. Wave heights are projected to reach between 4 and 7 feet in central regions and 3 to 6 feet in the south.

Authorities advise seafarers and island communities to exercise caution, particularly those operating small vessels or engaged in fishing. With the southwest monsoon still active, the MET Office continues to monitor changing conditions and urges the public to stay updated through official alerts.
