More than USD 69 million has been distributed in loans and scholarships to Maldivian students pursuing higher education since the beginning of 2024, according to new figures released by the Ministry of Higher Education, Labour and Skills Development.
The data, covering January 2024 through 11 September this year, underscores the government’s investment in supporting students both at home and abroad. Of the total, USD 69.1 million was allocated as student loans to 1,226 students. This year alone, USD 23.7 million has gone to 396 students — including 153 men and 243 women.
In addition to loans, the Ministry reported USD 23.9 million in scholarships awarded over the same period. Since last year, the scheme has supported 560 male and 666 female students.
The government has also spent heavily on undergraduate programmes. More than USD 17.3 million has been disbursed for 4,469 undergraduates since 2024, with USD 7.5 million directed to 1,687 students this year alone.
The Ministry’s report highlights a strong female presence among enrollees: 2,806 women have registered for undergraduate studies compared with 1,663 men. Graduation numbers also show steady progress, with 5,579 students completing their studies since 2024, including 2,237 this year. At present, 8,330 students are enrolled in first-degree programmes.
Officials say these figures reflect not only the government’s financial commitment but also the increasing demand for higher education opportunities among Maldivian youth, particularly women.
