President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has reaffirmed his government’s unwavering commitment to the nation’s fishermen, declaring that work is well underway to raise the price of fish to 20 rufiyaa per kilogram. He stressed that this was one of his most important campaign promises, and that the goal is not a quick fix, but a sustainable system that ensures long-term prosperity for fishing communities.
Addressing the people of Meemu Atoll Dhiggaru during his island tour, the President explained that while such a major change cannot happen instantly, his administration is pushing forward at full speed. “Just declaring that fish will be bought at 20 rufiyaa tomorrow won’t make it real. This requires hard work across the industry, with the Ministry, MIFCO, and all stakeholders working together” he said.
Milestones Already Achieved
President Muizzu reminded fishermen that the pledge to pay within 48 hours has already been delivered, a breakthrough that has brought stability and trust to countless families dependent on fishing income. He assured that further measures are in motion to strengthen the sector.
Building Support for Fishermen
To ease the daily challenges of fishermen, the government is expanding access to ice storage facilities across the Maldives and ensuring that fuel is available at STO rates nationwide. These steps, the President emphasized, are critical building blocks toward achieving the 20 rufiyaa target.
A Lasting Promise to Fishermen
President Muizzu underlined that fishermen will remain at the heart of his administration’s economic vision, pledging that the government will not rest until every promise to them is honored. By securing better prices, faster payments, and lower operational costs, the President aims to deliver a new era of stability and dignity for Maldivian fishermen.
