President Muizzu reaffirms pledges: Housing, debt relief, and youth development on track

By Ahmed Ashraf Published October 2, 2025

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to building a prosperous, united, and values-driven Maldives, pledging that every promise he made to the people will be delivered.

Addressing a packed political gathering at PNC House, the President highlighted a multi-pronged development philosophy — advancing physical infrastructure while strengthening the nation’s human and social fabric. He stressed that true progress is not just measured in buildings and roads, but also in nurturing youth, reviving national values, and ensuring fairness across all islands.

Youth Development at the Core

President Muizzu emphasized that his Youth Development Project has already begun with 343 students enrolled, with plans to train 5,000 Maldivian youth in the next three years. The program aims to produce a skilled, disciplined generation rooted in Islamic principles and national pride, ensuring they are well-prepared for careers in the military, police, and broader public service.

“We are not only building infrastructure — we are building minds, strengthening discipline, and reviving the spirit of unity our ancestors lived by” he said.

Housing and Infrastructure

Housing, one of the nation’s biggest concerns, was given prominence. The President announced that work will begin this year on 3,000 new flats in Malé, in addition to 4,000 units arranged under India’s Line of Credit. He assured citizens that previously allocated land plots and flats will be handed over without alteration, reaffirming that housing promises remain a top national priority.

Alongside housing, he underscored the government’s commitment to airports, reclamation projects, and island infrastructure, ensuring equitable development across the country.

Restoring Social Unity and Values

The President stressed the importance of repairing the nation’s social fabric, which he said had suffered from years of disrespect, division, and harmful influences. As part of these efforts, his government has banned vapes, introduced generational smoking restrictions, and is actively combating narcotics to protect youth.

“This is not only about infrastructure. True development means restoring respect, discipline, and unity — the Maldives of our ancestors” he declared.

Economic Revival and Debt Relief

On the economy, President Muizzu reassured citizens that despite inheriting a “ruined and indebted” financial system, the Maldives is now on a stable path. He hailed China’s confirmation of a debt relief deal as a turning point and vowed that all foreign and domestic debts would be paid responsibly, without burdening the people or resorting to printing money.

“We will not place this nation in distress. The economy is on track, and debts will be paid — fairly and responsibly” he said.

Governance with Justice and Equality

President Muizzu affirmed that his administration will govern with justice and fairness, without discrimination or revenge. Every island and every citizen, he said, is equally important, and development will be spread nationwide.

“This government will uphold the rule of law, ensure peace, and deliver the development the people desire,” he pledged.

A Nation Moving Forward

The President concluded by expressing deep gratitude to citizens for their continued support and confidence in his leadership. He promised that in the coming days, Maldivians across the country will witness more projects launched, stalled works revived, and promises fulfilled.

“My guiding principle remains clear: meaningful, transparent development with a long-term vision. Allah willing, we will move this nation forward together” he declared.
