President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has announced the fulfillment of another key social welfare pledge of his administration — increasing the allowance for single mothers and introducing a new monthly allowance for thalassemia patients, effective January 2026.
Speaking to residents of L. Gamu during his ongoing visit to Laamu Atoll, President Muizzu confirmed that MVR 211 million has been allocated in the upcoming year’s national budget to raise the single mother allowance to MVR 3,000 per child.
He further revealed that MVR 11.7 million has been included to launch a MVR 1,000 monthly allowance for every thalassemia patient in the Maldives — a new initiative that fulfills another of his manifesto promises to strengthen social protection and build a compassionate society.
“These are not just welfare measures; they are commitments made to our people — now being delivered,” President Muizzu said, emphasizing that his government is steadily turning manifesto promises into reality.
The President noted that when he took office, many families and patients faced economic hardships due to limited government assistance. The new allowances, he explained, reflect his administration’s vision to ensure inclusive growth and equal opportunity for all citizens under the “Fahi Fathis” agenda.
The increase in support for single parents, raising child-rearing assistance to MVR 12,000 per household (MVR 3,000 per child), was a core promise in President Muizzu’s manifesto, aimed at empowering families and reducing dependency.
Similarly, the introduction of a thalassemia allowance delivers on his promise to provide targeted aid to vulnerable health groups — a step long requested by families and advocacy organizations.
With these measures, President Muizzu continues to demonstrate that his administration is one of delivery and compassion, advancing tangible reforms that directly improve the lives of Maldivian citizens.
