A daring early morning robbery at Velana International Airport has sparked a major police investigation after masked assailants stole a suitcase filled with foreign currency from Bank employees.
The theft occurred around 4:45 AM today inside the walkway that connects the old airport terminal with the newly opened Terminal 1. According to information confirmed by authorities, two masked individuals armed with knives confronted the two employees who were transporting the funds into the terminal.
Sources familiar with the investigation revealed that the stolen briefcase contained a significant amount of US dollars intended for counter distribution to Maldivian travelers departing this morning. The exact value of the cash has not yet been disclosed.
Only the two bank staff members were present at the time of the robbery. Police have clarified that officers were not involved in the money transfer, addressing public rumors that security personnel were nearby when the heist took place.
Law enforcement teams are currently reviewing the scene and collecting evidence. The suspects reportedly fled immediately after seizing the briefcase, and no injuries have been reported.
The incident has raised urgent questions about security protocols for transporting high-value cash through the nation’s main international gateway. Police continue to investigate and urge anyone with relevant information to come forward.
