Police have confirmed a significant new development in the Velana International Airport cash robbery case, announcing that the launch used in the pre dawn heist has been seized and four men have been remanded in custody as the investigation intensifies.
According to Maldives Police Service, the vessel used to escape after stealing a briefcase containing a large amount of US dollars from Bank of Maldives staff has been located and taken under police control. The boat is being examined as part of evidence gathering efforts.
Authorities identified the arrested suspects as:
- Mazin Moosa, 25, Raysham, L. Maavah
- Ahmed Raihaan Naeem, 20, M. Koras, Malé City
- Ibrahim Anoof, 24, Alivilage, K. Guraidhoo
- Hussain Shahudh, 30, Alivilage, K. Guraidhoo
The suspects were produced before court for a remand hearing, where a five day detention order was granted to allow investigators to continue building the case.
The robbery took place early on October 27 in the walkway linking the old terminal to Terminal 1, where masked attackers armed with knives confronted BML employees transporting foreign currency intended for departing passengers.
Police state that updates will be released as more information becomes eligible for public disclosure. Investigators remain focused on tracking the stolen dollars and establishing the full network behind the crime.
This case continues to raise concerns over the safety of cash transfers through high traffic transport areas in the country.
