The government has launched a coordinated emergency operation to resolve the water contamination issue in Fuvahmulah City, mobilising military and civil agencies to ensure residents have continuous access to safe drinking water.
According to President’s Office Chief Spokesperson Heena Waleed, the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) is actively transporting water supplies by both air and sea while providing logistical and on-ground assistance. A total of 500 cases of 5-liter bottles, 1,300 cases of 1.5-liter bottles, and 1,000 cases of 500-milliliter bottles have already reached the city, with 1,200 cases distributed to residents and further shipments on the way.
Meanwhile, Fenaka Corporation, working under the supervision of the Maldives Food and Drug Authority (MFDA) and Health Protection Agency (HPA), has initiated a full-scale disinfection of the city’s water network. The process involves cleaning tanks, flushing pipelines, and resuming water production in line with health and safety standards. Normal distribution is expected to restart within six hours once quality testing confirms the water’s safety.
Authorities emphasised that all relevant institutions are working in close coordination to fully restore safe water services as swiftly as possible, reaffirming the administration’s commitment to protecting public health and maintaining essential utilities across the nation.
