Dhiraagu CEO Ismail Rasheed says Google’s Dhivaru cable will elevate Maldives role in global connectivity

By Ahmed Ashraf Published 8 hours ago

Dhiraagu CEO Ismail Rasheed said the newly announced Google Dhivaru subsea cable system will significantly strengthen the Maldives position in global connectivity networks. Speaking to the Google Cloud Blog, he said the project will enhance national network resilience, support high speed digital growth and reinforce the Maldives emergence as a strategic node in regional data routes. He noted that this milestone reflects the country’s rising importance in international digital infrastructure and the expanding opportunities created by robust subsea investments.

Google unveiled Dhivaru as a major trans Indian Ocean cable that will connect the Maldives, Christmas Island and Oman. The system is designed to improve reach, reliability and resilience for expanding digital demand across the region. Google highlighted that Dhivaru is engineered to support the growing need for low latency services, especially as artificial intelligence applications continue to scale.

Rasheed said the project complements long term national efforts to build a strong digital foundation. He stated that the Maldives has made consistent progress in subsea connectivity and that the addition of Google’s Dhivaru system will further boost the country’s capacity to host resilient digital services. He added that improved international connectivity will play a key role in supporting economic diversification, technological adoption and digital service expansion across the islands.

Google confirmed that the initiative includes a new regional connectivity hub in Addu City. The hub will provide cable switching for stronger resilience, content caching to reduce latency and colocation services that give carriers and businesses reliable infrastructure to host equipment securely. Google also noted that subsea cable systems are highly energy efficient and that it is exploring renewable aligned solutions to support power requirements for the new hub.

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu welcomed the development as a strong signal of international confidence in the Maldives stable investment climate. In his statement, he said Dhivaru directly advances his vision for a diversified and digitised national economy. He explained that the Maldives is increasingly positioned at the crossroads of global connectivity and that this investment enhances the country’s participation in the future digital economy.

Rasheed said the partnership showcases how the Maldives is becoming deeply integrated with global digital systems. He stated that Dhivaru strengthens the nation’s digital ecosystem and supports the rollout of high speed broadband across islands. He also noted that the project will enable better user experience, faster access to digital content and improved service continuity.

With Dhivaru, the Maldives moves closer to securing a central role in the Indian Ocean’s expanding data landscape. The project marks a forward step in national digital resilience and global integration as the country prepares for the next generation of digital services and economic opportunities.
