“Air, land and sea capabilities will be reinforced”, President Muizzu promises in MNDF expansion plan

By Ahmed Ashraf Published 6 hours ago

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has declared that strengthening the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) is a core responsibility of the government, unveiling a sweeping plan to expand and modernize the country’s military across every major division. He made the remarks during the Hafthaa 104 ceremony, where he highlighted unprecedented progress achieved over the past two years in national security.

Opening his address, the President said the Maldives must never be viewed as a weak nation. He noted that despite the country’s small population, the Maldives carries a long and proud history that demands a strong defense architecture capable of safeguarding independence and territorial integrity. He emphasised that his administration is working with firm conviction to build a military that reflects the aspirations of the Maldivian people.

According to the President, work is already underway to enhance the MNDF’s capabilities in all critical sectors. This includes significant infrastructure upgrades, the expansion of operational facilities, and the procurement of modern equipment to reinforce readiness on land, at sea, and in the air.

One of the most notable developments is the ongoing effort to double the size of the Coast Guard fleet. The expansion comes at a time of increasing maritime security needs in the Indian Ocean and is intended to ensure the Maldives can monitor, protect, and respond effectively across its vast Exclusive Economic Zone.

The President also highlighted the strengthening of the Marine Corps and the continued establishment of the Air Corps. In this regard, he noted the recent commissioning of a new air station in Addu, describing it as a strategic asset in the southernmost region. Similar initiatives are progressing in the northern atolls to ensure balanced national coverage.

He stressed that securing the country’s maritime and airspace is essential for long term sovereignty. The establishment of new stations, reinforced logistical support, and expanded aerial surveillance are key components of this broader defense policy.

President Muizzu reaffirmed that the government will continue to invest in a capable and modern force that reflects national values and strategic needs. He said citizens can be confident that the Maldives is preparing for the future with strength, clarity, and direction, guided by a commitment to protect the nation’s freedom and ensure lasting security.
