President Dr Mohamed Muizzu marked Huravee Day by recalling the courage and strategic brilliance of Dhonbandaarain, praising the national jihad that freed the Maldives from Malabar occupation 281 years ago. In a message shared on social media, the President said the events of that era remain a powerful reminder of the resilience and unity that safeguarded the nation at one of its darkest moments.
He highlighted that the Malabars had burned several parts of Malé, taken the Sultan hostage, tortured Maldivians and subjected the country to days filled with fear and instability. The President stated that Dhonbandaarain’s decisive leadership rescued the Maldives from this turmoil and restored dignity, freedom and national security.
Although nearly three centuries have passed, the President noted that the memory of this victory remains deeply rooted in Maldivian identity and continues to inspire gratitude and patriotism.
He extended warm greetings to the Maldivian people on the occasion of Huravee Day and prayed for the country to remain blessed with enduring freedom, stability and prosperity.
