96 illicit massage parlours shut as President Muizzu delivers on Malé City ward complaints

By Ahmed Ashraf Published December 31, 2025

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has stated that public resolve and moral responsibility are critical to eliminating illicit sexual activities, as authorities shut down 96 massage parlours following widespread complaints raised by Malé City residents.

In a social media message, the President revealed that the closures were carried out under a nationwide enforcement operation launched on December 9, 2025, after citizens repeatedly raised concerns about illegal sexual activities disguised as legitimate massage businesses during the President’s ward meetings with Malé City residents.

President Muizzu acknowledged that the persistence of such establishments reflects continued public demand, stressing that enforcement alone cannot bring lasting change unless society collectively rejects immoral practices.

“These places continue to operate because there are people who use their services,” the President said, emphasising that reducing vice and transforming society requires aligned intentions and actions from the public, institutions, and all stakeholders.

He noted that the government’s response was directly shaped by the voices of citizens, reinforcing the administration’s commitment to acting on public concerns and safeguarding social values.

Quoting the Holy Quran, the President reminded citizens: “Indeed, Allah will not change the condition of a people until they change what is in themselves.” (Ar-Ra’d: 11).

President Muizzu concluded by urging Maldivians to stand united against immorality and all forms of vice, stating that meaningful reform begins with individual responsibility as the government continues firm action to protect public order and community wellbeing.
