Land reclamation at Rasmalé Site A has surpassed the halfway mark, with 71 hectares reclaimed out of the planned 137.5 hectares, reaching 51.64 percent overall completion, according to the latest project update issued by the Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL).
The milestone highlights steady progress in what the government has framed as a transformational national development effort, aimed at easing land and housing constraints in the Greater Malé region through the long-term build-out of the Rasmalé eco-city project.
Reclamation activities at Site A are being carried out using the Cristóbal Colón, one of the world’s two largest Trailer Suction Hopper Dredgers, with a capacity of 46,000 cubic metres. The vessel is operated by international dredging contractor Jan De Nul, enabling accelerated reclamation volumes compared to conventional equipment.
MACL officially commenced reclamation works at Rasmalé Site A on 1 December 2025, with successive project updates confirming a consistent upward trajectory in reclaimed land totals.
President Dr Mohamed Muizzu, who has placed Rasmalé at the centre of his national housing and urban transformation agenda, has repeatedly underscored that the island is being developed as a zero-carbon, safe island concept, designed to support sustainable living, resilient infrastructure, and planned city development.
During an inspection visit to Rasmalé, the President’s Office said Muizzu was briefed on ongoing works and progress, reinforcing the administration’s political messaging that major reclamation and housing projects are moving from pledge to delivery.
Rasmalé, planned within the K. Fushidhiggaru Lagoon, is one of the Maldives’ largest reclamation-driven urban development initiatives, with the government portraying it as a flagship response to the country’s long-standing land scarcity and housing pressure.
