Applications have officially opened today (Sunday, January 18, 2026) for the Government’s Family Housing programme in the Greater Malé Region, a key initiative under President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s “Housing for All” policy aimed at securing long-term housing opportunities for Maldivian citizens aged 18 and above.
Unlike previous announcements that grouped applications under a single closing date, authorities have now confirmed separate deadlines for land and flat submissions, a move seen as part of the administration’s push to manage demand and accelerate processing across categories.
Two application deadlines announced
According to the official application schedule:
- Residential land applications close at 23:59 on Wednesday, March 4, 2026.
- Flat applications close at 23:59 on Friday, April 17, 2026.
Applications must be submitted online through the Ministry’s housing portal: boahiyaavahikan.housing.gov.mv.
Gazette regulations set the legal framework
The application process is governed by two sets of rules published in the Government Gazette, establishing eligibility, allocation methods and scoring mechanisms for applicants:
- Regulations for Allocating Flats to Residents of Malé
- Regulations for Allocating Residential Land to Residents of Malé
Local media reports have previously stated the broader policy framework includes the allocation of 15,000 land plots and 7,900 flats under the first phase of the “Housing for All” rollout.
Ministry eases documentation requirements in initial stage
To reduce delays and ease access for the public during the opening period, the Ministry has clarified that applicants are not required to submit the full set of documents outlined in the general regulations at this stage.
Instead, applicants need only provide the documents listed under Schedule 2 of the public announcement, including documentation required for applicants seeking consideration under special categories.
Hotline support opened for applicants
The public has been urged to seek clarification via the Ministry’s hotline support and official contact channels, including inquiries through email.
The Family Housing programme is expected to be one of the most politically significant public initiatives under President Muizzu’s administration, following earlier community consultations that prompted revisions to eligibility conditions before today’s launch.
