The Government has taken another decisive step toward transforming community fitness and youth development, with a new agreement signed to construct modern multi-sports complexes in Vilimalé, Hulhumalé Phase 1, and Hulhumalé Phase 2.

The agreement was signed yesterday at the Ministry of Sports, Fitness and Recreation by Ibrahim Shareef Mohamed, Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director of Maldives Airports Company Limited, and Abdulla Rafiu, Minister of Sports, Fitness and Recreation. The ceremony marked a major milestone in expanding high-quality recreational infrastructure in the Greater Malé Region.
The initiative forms part of a presidential pledge by Dr. Mohamed Muizzu to establish fitness and recreation centres across all inhabited islands by the end of 2026, reinforcing the administration’s commitment to public health, youth empowerment, and inclusive urban development.
Officials noted that the new urban sports complexes will complement a broader nationwide rollout already underway. An earlier agreement signed on 18 August 2025 between the Ministry and MACL paved the way for fitness and recreation centres in 63 islands, ensuring that access to structured sports facilities is no longer limited to the capital region.
By leveraging MACL’s institutional capacity and aligning infrastructure development with national policy, the Government is positioning sports and fitness as a core pillar of community well-being, social cohesion, and long-term human development across the Maldives.
