By Hussain Shinan Published 6 hours ago

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu returned to the Maldives on Friday after completing a five-day official visit to Germany, undertaken at the invitation of German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier.

The visit, which began on Monday, featured a series of high-level engagements aimed at strengthening bilateral relations and expanding cooperation in areas of mutual interest.

During official talks in Berlin, President Muizzu and President Steinmeier reaffirmed their commitment to maintaining momentum in diplomatic dialogue and enhancing collaboration through continued high-level exchanges. Discussions focused on avenues to deepen partnerships that would deliver mutual benefits to both countries.

A key highlight of the visit was the Maldives–Germany Business Roundtable, where German companies were introduced to investment opportunities in the Maldives. Addressing the forum, President Muizzu outlined ongoing economic reforms and encouraged German businesses to explore emerging sectors as the Maldives works to diversify and broaden its economy.

The business engagement concluded with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between Visit Maldives and DERTOUR Deutschland GmbH to collaborate on destination marketing and promotional initiatives.

Beyond economic diplomacy, President Muizzu delivered a keynote address at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, where he shared the Maldives’ experience in addressing climate change and highlighted the existential risks faced by low-lying island nations. He also spoke at Deutsche Gesellschaft für Auswärtige Politik (DGAP), emphasising the strategic significance of the ocean in shaping foreign policy.

The visit coincided with the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the Maldives and Germany. An official reception was held in Berlin to commemorate the milestone, attended by members of the Maldivian delegation, senior German officials, diplomats and members of the Maldivian community residing in Germany.

As part of his programme, President Muizzu also met separately with Maldivians living in Germany, engaging in discussions about their experiences abroad and the challenges they face.

The Germany visit marks another step in strengthening bilateral ties, while reinforcing cooperation in economic development, climate action and diplomatic engagement between the two nations.
