A key Ramadan pledge by President Dr Mohamed Muizzu is now being rolled out nationwide, with 26 essential food items set to be sold at subsidised and affordable prices through outlets operated by the State Trading Organization.
The Ministry of Economic Development and Trade confirmed that staple commodities such as rice, sugar, and flour will be made available at controlled rates during the holy month. The list also includes additional products incorporated into the national essential goods registry on September 10 last year, broadening the scope of relief for households.
The move fulfills President Muizzu’s commitment to ease the financial burden on families during Ramadan, a period marked by increased food consumption and higher household spending. The administration has positioned the subsidy programme as part of its wider cost of living strategy, aimed at cushioning citizens from global price volatility and import driven inflation.
Distribution Across Greater Malé
In the Greater Malé region, essential goods will be available at:
- STO People’s Choice, Malé
- STO Wholesale, North Harbour
- STO Industrial Village
- STO Villingili Store
STO also confirmed that preparations are underway to open a new STO People’s Choice outlet in Hulhumalé ahead of Ramadan, expanding retail access in the fast growing residential hub.
Nationwide Coverage
Beyond the capital region, STO’s regional outlets will distribute the subsidised items in:
- HA. Hoarafushi
- HDh. Kulhudhuffushi
- B. Eydhafushi
- K. Villingili
- K. Hulhumalé

- GA. Villingili
- GDh. Thinadhoo
- Gn. Fuvahmulah
- S. Hithadhoo

Officials stressed that strengthening supply chains ahead of Ramadan is critical to preventing shortages and stabilising prices. By leveraging STO’s nationwide retail and wholesale network, the government aims to maintain steady availability of basic food commodities across the atolls.
This Ramadan intervention reinforces President Muizzu’s broader economic message, safeguarding affordability while ensuring uninterrupted access to essential goods during one of the most significant months in the Islamic calendar.
