A tree planting ceremony was held today to officially mark the completion of Phase 2 of the Malé Northside Boduthakurufaanu Magu Upgrading and Expansion Project, a major urban infrastructure initiative delivered ahead of Ramadan.

The event took place at the Phase 2 project site and was attended by the Minister of Construction, Housing and Infrastructure, Dr Abdulla Muththalib, cabinet ministers, and senior officials, alongside the Managing Director of Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC), DCP (Retd.) Ahmed Saudee. The ceremony symbolised the formal close of works on a critical section of one of Malé City’s busiest arterial roads.

Boduthakurufaanu Magu, which encircles the capital, carries thousands of daily commuters. For years, residents endured deteriorated road conditions, narrow lanes, limited parking, and frequent flooding during heavy rainfall due to outdated drainage. These long-standing challenges have now been addressed through comprehensive widening, asphalting, and modern drainage installation.

With the completion of Segments 1 and 2 ahead of Ramadan, traffic now flows smoothly in both directions, parking capacity has increased, and pedestrian safety has improved through newly built pavements. The upgraded harbour-side sea wall also enables safer and more efficient docking for vessels, benefiting boat operators, businesses, and logistics activity in the area. A new stormwater drainage system provides a durable solution to seasonal flooding.
Phase 1 of the project was opened to the public on 8 December 2025, delivering an 830-metre upgraded roadway with extensive sheet piling, asphalt surfacing, pedestrian lanes, drainage, lighting, and signage. Phase 2, scheduled to open on 16 February 2026, adds a further 254 metres of roadway and 260 metres of sheet piling, completed well ahead of contractual timelines.

The Boduthakurufaanu Magu redevelopment is a pledge of President Dr Mohamed Muizzu, aligned with his commitment to modernise Malé City’s infrastructure before Ramadan. Once fully operational, the project is expected to deliver lasting gains in mobility, safety, flood resilience, and urban quality of life for residents and commuters.
