Asphalt works on the extended section of Boduthakurufaanu Magu from Jetty 1 to the Henveiru Ferry Terminal will commence during Ramadan, Maldives Transport and Contracting Company Managing Director Ahmed Saudee has confirmed, underscoring steady progress on the capital’s landmark coastal highway project.
Saudee made the announcement during a tree planting event held along the redeveloped Boduthakurufaanu Magu phase 2 area, attended by cabinet ministers and senior officials. He stated that paving during the holy month will focus specifically on the stretch linking Jetty 1 and the Henveiru Ferry Terminal, a critical corridor within Malé’s ring road modernization initiative.

The project is being implemented in phases. While asphalt works move forward on this segment, development continues on adjacent sections. Based on the current schedule, the entire road expansion is expected to be completed by late April or early May.
Saudee acknowledged that construction in the congested market and harbor zone posed significant technical challenges. During sheet piling operations, crews encountered exceptionally hard rock layers, requiring temporary halts. In addition, tidal patterns forced work stoppages for several hours within each 24 hour period. Teams intensified operations during low tide windows to maintain progress and minimize delays.
“The progress achieved so far reflects the commitment of the MTCC team and the cooperation extended by State Owned Enterprises,” Saudee said.
Minister of Housing, Land and Urban Development Dr Abdulla Muththalib noted that the upgraded roadway near the Fish Market and North Harbour will greatly improve cargo handling and traffic flow, easing pressure on one of Malé’s busiest commercial districts.
He added that the project includes a dedicated storm water drainage system designed to prevent flooding. Although installation of pumps and related infrastructure may take additional time, the system will also enable improvements to water and sewerage services in the area.
The Boduthakurufaanu Magu expansion officially commenced on August 22 last year as part of a broader urban redevelopment drive across Malé. With asphalt paving from Jetty 1 to the Henveiru Ferry Terminal set to begin during Ramadan, the transformation of the capital’s key coastal artery is moving into its decisive phase.
