“A new chapter for domestic operations begins at Terminal 2 of Velana International Airport,” declared Ibrahim Shareef Mohamed, Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director of Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL), as the airport officially shifted all domestic arrivals and departures to the newly operationalised Terminal 2.
The milestone transition was marked at a ceremony held on February 17 at Velana International Airport (VIA), attended by Vice President Hussain Mohamed Latheef, cabinet ministers, MACL board members, senior management and staff who played a role in facilitating the transfer of operations.
Speaking at the event, Shareef described the opening of the dedicated domestic terminal as a transformative step aimed at improving passenger convenience and meeting the growing demand for inter-island connectivity.

Terminal 2 has been equipped with a range of amenities designed to enhance the domestic travel experience. Families travelling through the facility can make use of a dedicated children’s play area, while passengers will find expanded food and beverage options within the boarding area. International brands such as Costa Coffee, Dairy Queen and Gloria Jean’s are among the outlets now operating at the terminal.
Newly established prayer rooms have also been incorporated into the design, reflecting MACL’s commitment to inclusive and passenger-focused facilities.
The operationalisation of Terminal 2 is expected to streamline passenger movement and create a more organised flow for domestic flights. Passengers travelling within the country are advised to proceed directly to Terminal 2 and confirm their flight details with respective airlines prior to departure.
MACL said the transition aligns with President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s vision to elevate service standards and enhance the overall passenger experience at the Maldives’ main aviation gateway.
