Closing the “Influence Gap”: President Muizzu Details Why the 7-Month Wait Between Elections Harms Democracy

By Ahmed Ashraf Published 15 hours ago

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has issued a powerful call for national unity and systemic reform, urging citizens to support the synchronization of presidential and parliamentary elections. Speaking following a People’s National Congress (PNC) motorcycle rally, the President framed the proposed constitutional amendment as a “noble” initiative designed to maximize public participation and eliminate the window for political manipulation.

The proposal, which recently passed through the People’s Majlis, suggests holding both major elections on the same day. Under the new framework, a public referendum is slated to coincide with the Local Council Elections in April next year, giving the Maldivian electorate the final say on this landmark shift in the nation’s democratic architecture.

Strengthening the People’s Voice

President Muizzu emphasized that the current gap between presidential and legislative polls often dilutes the democratic process. By holding them simultaneously, the President argues that the high turnout traditionally seen in presidential races will naturally carry over to the parliamentary vote, ensuring that the Majlis reflects the will of the broadest possible segment of society.

“The presidential election traditionally sees the highest voter turnout,” President Muizzu remarked. “If voters are provided with the ballot papers to elect their parliamentary representatives at that same moment, it ensures that the members chosen are elected by the largest possible segment of the population.”

Eliminating Undue Influence

A core pillar of the President’s argument is the removal of the “government candidate” advantage. Currently, parliamentary elections held months after a presidential inauguration allow candidates to campaign under the banner of an established administration, which the President suggests can lead to skewed results and undue influence.

“The fairest approach is to hold both elections on the same day,” the President explained. “Under this system, no one can claim to be a ‘government candidate’ beforehand, as no one would know which government will be elected that day. This restricts the opportunity for influence and ensures the elections are held with maximum public participation.”

A Roadmap for Stability

The constitutional amendment bill also introduces practical administrative changes, including:

  • Concurrent Polling: Presidential and parliamentary elections to be held on a single date.
  • Revised Terms: A fixed five-year term for the People’s Majlis, commencing on the 1st of December.
  • National Referendum: A public vote in April 2026 to ratify these changes.

President Muizzu dismissed concerns regarding legal conflicts, asserting that the move is a vital step toward ensuring national stability and ending the cycle of political turmoil that often follows staggered election cycles. He expressed confidence that the Maldivian public would recognize the sincerity of the proposal, noting that even critics would find merit in the plan if viewed through an objective lens of national interest.
