PNC Holds Major Motorcycle Rally in Malé Ahead of Elections

By Hussain Shinan Published 14 hours ago

The ruling People’s National Congress held a large motorcycle rally across Malé on Friday, drawing a significant turnout of supporters as the party intensified campaign activities ahead of the upcoming local elections.

The rally was organized as part of the party’s preparations for the Local Council Elections, Women’s Development Committee (WDC) elections and the upcoming public referendum, which are expected to take place in the coming weeks.

The procession began near the Mary Brown area in Maafannu before making its way through the capital and concluding at the party’s headquarters in Henveiru. Supporters riding motorcycles formed a lengthy convoy through the streets of Malé, accompanied by party flags and campaign banners.

Among those taking part in the rally were President Mohamed Muizzu, Vice President Hussain Mohamed Latheef and Speaker of Parliament Abdul Raheem Abdulla. Several cabinet ministers, Members of Parliament and senior figures from the party leadership also joined the event alongside a large number of party members and supporters.

Addressing participants after the rally concluded, President Muizzu spoke about the importance of strengthening local governance structures. He said his administration does not believe in weakening or sidelining local councils, emphasizing that they play a vital role in implementing development initiatives across the country.

The President urged voters to support candidates contesting under the Congress Party banner for city councils, island councils and Women’s Development Committees, stating that electing aligned representatives would help accelerate the implementation of government development projects.

The rally forms part of a series of campaign activities being organized by the party as the country prepares for the upcoming elections.
