The Adhaalath Party has officially endorsed the proposal to hold the Maldives’ presidential and parliamentary elections on the same day, strengthening momentum behind a constitutional reform set to be decided in a national referendum on April 4.
The amendment, passed by the People’s Majlis, seeks to synchronize the country’s two major elections and define parliamentary term limits. As required by law, the proposal will now be put to a public vote, scheduled alongside the Local Council Elections.
In a statement shared on X, the Adhaalath Party confirmed that its Consultative Council voted by majority to support a “Yes” vote in the referendum. The party said the decision was made after careful consideration of national interest and the potential benefits to the public.
Support for the initiative is continuing to build across key political figures. Qasim Ibrahim, leader of the Jumhooree Party and Member of Parliament for Maamigili, has publicly backed the move, stating that holding both elections simultaneously would best serve citizens.
Earlier, the Maldives Development Alliance (MDA), led by MP Ahmed Siyam Mohamed, also announced its support for the proposal, further consolidating backing ahead of the vote.
If approved, the amendment would align election cycles, enhance administrative efficiency, and mark a significant shift in the Maldives’ electoral framework.
