As the global community marks World Water Day, the Maldives is spotlighting a major milestone in its push toward sustainable and resilient water infrastructure, with the completion of a fully solar-powered water production system in HDh. Kulhudhuffushi.
The government, under the policy direction of President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, has prioritized the development of water systems that harness the country’s natural resources to ensure long-term water security. This strategy comes amid increasing threats from climate change, natural disasters, and global instability, all of which pose risks to essential service delivery in island nations.

In line with this vision, the Male’ Water and Sewerage Company Pvt. Ltd. (MWSC) launched an ambitious project in 2025 to establish a water production system in Kulhudhuffushi powered entirely by solar energy, eliminating reliance on diesel. The project has now reached physical completion, with testing currently underway.
Once operational, expected from April, the system will enable the island to meet its entire water demand without the use of fossil fuels. This transition is set to significantly reduce operational costs, cut carbon emissions, and enhance the reliability of water services.

The development marks a turning point in the Maldives’ approach to utility infrastructure, setting a precedent for other inhabited islands to adopt renewable energy-driven solutions. It also aligns with broader national goals to advance sustainable development while strengthening resilience against external shocks.
Authorities have acknowledged the collective efforts of all stakeholders involved in delivering the project, highlighting it as a model for future initiatives aimed at transforming public services through innovation and sustainability.
