By Ahmed Ashraf Published 13 hours ago

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has proposed allocating dedicated parliamentary seats for youth and women, revealing the idea during the “Expresso with President” event held Saturday night.

Addressing attendees, the President said he is considering reserving 10 percent of seats each for young people and women in the , as part of efforts to enhance inclusive representation in national decision-making.

“In my view, 10 percent should be dedicated to youth and 10 percent to women,” Muizzu said, noting that the proposal has drawn both support and differing opinions.

He also highlighted concerns over the current structure of the Majlis, which consists of 93 members, stating his intention to halt further increases in parliamentary seats alongside population growth. According to the President, implementing such a change would require legislative amendments.

On how the reserved seats could be allocated, President Muizzu suggested that broader discussions are necessary. He pointed to a potential system similar to the mechanism used for women’s representation in local councils, where specific constituencies are designated through a lottery process.

The President clarified that the proposal remains under consideration and is yet to be finalized, indicating that further consultations will shape the outcome of the initiative.
